The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment Review (Day 15)

#30dayglowup - Day 15

Is this 'straight-talking product' your solution for a dry scalp and dandruff? Let's see if it's worth it...

The Inkey List Salicylic acid scalp treatment

In my quest for the healthiest, shiniest hair I can get I am always researching new products and looking into different things I can try for hair growth and health. I was recently looking at products on Cult Beauty to take my basket up to free shipping when I noticed something I had never seen or heard of before: The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment. Now, this intrigued me because I love using salicylic acid as a chemical exfoliant in my skincare routine and have seen the benefits firsthand and so it makes perfect sense to incorporate it into my haircare. I also have struggled with a dry scalp before so I’m always looking for ways to fully eliminate that because having an unhealthy scalp can limit hair growth.

This product is part of The Inkey List’s new haircare collection which is supposed to act as skincare but for your scalp, aiming to ‘cut through the industry jargon with straight-talking products’. Since for my skincare I use mostly The Ordinary which has a similar aim to provide active ingredients for a cheap price, that sounded good to me. The product claims to get rid of buildup, gently remove flaking and reduce itchiness as well as reduce oiliness of hair over time.

If you’re interested in finding out whether this product is going to work for you and if it does what it claims, then just keep reading.

First impressions

My genuine first reaction to this product was surprise at how small it was. It cost me £11.99 which I thought wasn’t bad considering I was expecting it to be bigger (my fault for not reading properly), but at a mere 50 ml it didn’t seem like it was going to be lasting me very long. The packaging is very nice and solid and feels high quality, and the pump works very well and distributes the product evening.

You use this product as a pre-shampoo treatment before washing your hair; applying it evenly across the scalp and leaving it for around 10 minutes before rinsing it out. I didn’t feel any tingling or anything when applying it although since I don’t in my skincare routine I wasn’t expecting to. The pump works well although there was no way I was covering my entire scalp with only one to two pumps as recommended. Overall it was very easy to apply and since I normally do pre shampoo treatments anyway before washing my hair, the extra time didn’t bother me.

Results

Overall, it does work. I found that after using this treatment my scalp was a lot less irritated and I was able to go longer between washing my hair without my scalp beginning to itch. It eliminated any flaking I got in my hair, and in combination with using aloe vera (As I discussed in my ‘How to fix your dry scalp’ post) my scalp is a lot healthier than before. As someone who used to worry about wearing dark clothes or having other people do my hair due to getting white flakes and dryness, using this product has helped with feeling more confident about my hair.

As for hair growth I don’t think I could conclusively say anything about if this has impacted it as I try out so many different treatments on my hair and can’t narrow it down to this one product. However I’m sure that having a clear scalp and less blockage of the hair follicles it would benefit hair thickness and your overall rate of growth, I just can’t speak for myself because I haven’t used this product for long enough or had it as the only independent variable.

How salicylic acid works

Salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliant that removes the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and inside pores. It is therefore effective at helping dry skin as it can remove the build up which causes flaking by removing the gunk that clogs up your pores.

In terms of haircare, having an unhealthy scalp can be detrimental to your hair growth by blocking hair follicles on your scalp and preventing hair growth. By salicylic acid removing the debris that blocks up your pores, your hair may be able to grow thicker and more quickly.

Final verdict – is it worth it?

Overall, unless I find I cheaper alternative that does the same thing, I think I will repurchase this product. It does what it’s meant to do and is very beneficial to my scalp health. However, I don’t think it’s going to last a long time and I wouldn’t prioritize this over my other haircare products because it’s not super cheap and it’s only 50 ml. If you have the cash to spare though and struggle with a dry scalp, definitely try this out.

Pros

  • Effective at removing dry skin
  • Easy to apply
  • Not time consuming
  • Helps to remove product build-up on my scalp
  • Nice packaging

Cons

  • Small amount of product
  • Uses a lot of pumps to cover the entire scalp

In conclusion

In relation to my glow up journey this product has helped to eliminate a big security of mine which in turn increases how confidence, however it is not the be-all-end all in terms of scalp care and can be quite expensive if you look at how much product you’re actually getting. Basically, it’s very good at what it does but it’s if it’s worth the cost to you.

Thank you for reading and I hope this post will help you decide if this product is right for you; I know when I was researching it there’s not a lot of product reviews out there.
